Finding collections can be nothing more than a stroke of luck as was certainly the case back in the late summer of 1993. One evening, I was thumbing through an already two-week old issue of the Comics Buyers Guide when I stumbled upon a tiny classified ad which offered near mint to mint complete runs of Gold Key's Doctor Solar and Magnus. I thought to myself, "yeah right, another overgraded group of books, but heck, it's just a phone call". A gentle man by the name of Dennis Richard with a thick bostonian accent answered the phone. Amazing! He still had these "NM/M" runs. Although a challenge to decipher the accent, his lowkey certainty regarding his fine collection convinced me it was worth the risk to overnight a bank check.
What I received was what Mr. Richard had claimed, newstand fresh books with bone white pages and mirrored covers. When I called him back to thank him, I then asked the $75,000 question, "Do you have any other stuff like this?" He modestly replied, "NM/M runs of Marvel and D.C. 1961 - 1970 something."! I tried to respond but nothing came out for a few seconds. Finially, once I was able to collect my thoughts and communicate again, I told Mr. Richard not to run any more ads in CBG, that I would buy every book thru 1969 that he owned, which is exactly what I did. Can you imaging, nearly 4,000 Marvel, D.C., Gold Key, ACG, Charlton comic book runs, 98% of which were as gorgeous if not better than the previously mentioned Gold Key runs.
Now recognized as a pedigree collection by CGC, you can still purchase some of the books from this classic MA collection by clicking to the Collectors Inventory or the Best Of ComicCollectors.net - All Auction SALE.
